So if anyone was looking at NBC's pre-Upfront schedule and wondering "WTF NBC! Where's Scrubs!", don't fear. Just because NBC's corporate douche bags dumped it doesn't make it gone. Scrubs is lucky, they are produced by ABC, which has been trying to get the show for years. Apparently the cast is going back to work and preparing for an 8th season (which is really impressive, seeing as I recall a time when Scrubs almost got canceled) to air on ABC. So yay!
In other ABC related news, how is it possible that no one is even talking about Miss Guided. I mean, it isn't getting ANY news or reviews or comments. If there's one thing worse than negative feedback, it's no feedback. Too bad, that show is suprisingly funny and cute and sweet and is kind of awesome. If only people cared.
ps: please watch tonight at 8pm on ABC. Sure it's probably getting canceled, but at least feel like you missed out on something good. And, if you do, I'll watch Friday Night Lights, promise!
Well the year is almost out, which means a list! Not just any list, but a list of bests! So without further ado...
24 "9:00 AM - 10:00 AM"
This season was so bleh I didn't even finish up the season, but it started off so strong. This episode, where the 24 producers decided to nuke Valencia, CA, was a particularly strong one. I remember being on the edge of my seat for the entire 4 hour premiere.
30 Rock "Somebody to Love"
With so many top rate episodes, picking one standout was hard. But I felt this one stood out as a best of 2007. I mean, the one liners alone ranked this episode. If I were to introduce someone to 30 Rock, I'd do it with this episode.
Battlestar Galactica "Maelstrom"
While I was watching this episode, I remember thinking this was probably my favorite of the season. Then Kara "died". So it no longer held that title. But knowing Kara isn't dead changes everything. This episode regains it's spot as my fave of 2007. I mean, it was such a moving episode, especially for Kara. It really built on stuff established from the beginning about her past. I swore at the time I'd never watch this again, but clearly that's going to change.
Dexter "Resistance is Futile"
This was a hard choice for me, since every episode this season has been spot-on excellent. I almost put "Left Turn Ahead" as my favorite (with a resigned Dexter planning to turn himself in), but I looked over the episodes, and went with this one. What better moment is there, Doakes surprising Dexter at the cabin? I love how, even though Doakes knew Dex was weird and odd, he was still shocked by the revelation. Brilliant.
Doctor Who "Utopia"
A serious no brainer here. How many times did I watch this the week it aired? 8? 9? Yeah. I think so. So good I wrote about it twice. After what I considered a pretty mediocre season, Davies comes and blows me away with this little gem and breathed new life into the show. Turns out that lasted only one other episode before crapping on the finale. But I still adore "Utopia" to death.
Grey's Anatomy "Some Kind of Miracle"
From the reactions I heard from this episode, it was either love it or hate it. I loved it. This was an emotional slam dunk incorporating all the greatest characters into one surreal, out of body episode. Ep damn near broke my heart, too. Gotta love the closure, with Mere and her mom. I have to give a mention to an episode I completely forgot when creating this list, "Wishin' and Hopin'". I forgot how moved I was by Meredith and her really cold mom. That's probably why I loved "Some Kind of Miracle", it closed the wounds opened by the earlier episode.
Heroes "Distractions"
I almost went with "Company Man" or "Five Years Gone", but I felt that I couldn't ignore the awesomeness that was Claude. For a character that appeared in so few episodes, he left a big mark. A number of casual fans (not freaks like me) cited him as a fave. So I went with distractions, the episode that sent my already Hell-bound ship (Peter/Claire) further into Hell. To a special Hell. Yup, my favorite Heroes episode of 2007 involved that revelation. But really, Claude tormenting Peter by stealing a purse and leaving, has to be a top moment. And you know what, Peter still had a serious Claire/love moment after Claude pushed him off that roof and he healed. Ah, yet another reason to adore him. Oh Chris, please come back, Heroes needs you.
House "Insensitive"
This was a fairly easy choice for me. The episode where Cameron wants to have casual sex with Chase. Duh. But other stuff happened, like House getting all obsessive over a girl who doesn't feel pain, and stalking down Cuddy during dates and to her home. Yeah. Awesome.
LOST "One of Us"
I'm thrilled that there were so many contenders to choose from for this title. I mean, you have "Flashes Before Your Eyes" the Desmond, parallel world flash(back?). Then you've got the brilliant finale, and there was a great Claire episode and an interesting Ben ep too. Basically, almost every episode, except 1 in 2007 was great, if not amazing. But I went with the heartbreaking Juliet on-island flashback instead of the heartbreaking Desmond one. I'm making a stand and saying Juliet's my favorite other. How can your heart not break for her as she believes her sister to be dead? Elizabeth Mitchell, my metaphorical hat goes off to you.
Pushing Daisies "Pie-Lette"
Psht, like there's even a question. This one episode spawned an unhealthy obsession. I posted about it 7 times before it even aired. I definitely watched this episode over and over like a dozen times. As I said before, my favorite episode of the series.
Scrubs "My Musical"
Oh this ranks probably because, as a fan of the show, I've been waiting for this for years. And it delivered. Enormously. Brilliantly. I'm really happy it aired in 2007, just so I can talk about it some more.
The Office (US) "Back From Vacation"
This was a tough one, since I already made a stand on "Gay Witch Hunt" as my all time favorite from that season. So a second favorite was tough. I mean I almost went with "The Job", the lol-able season finale. But really, Michael sending a scandalous picture of Jan to the co-workers? Brilliance. I watched this episode recently, and yes, it was hysterical.
Veronica Mars "Weevils Wobble But They Don't Go Down"
Wow, I didn't even write about this episode. I remember watching this episode, the one before the finale, and thinking it was very old school. Weevil was badass and in trouble, Veronica was helping him and being slick. Then the finale aired, and it was kinda underwhelming, especially since it was a series finale.
So I figured, while I'm calling this the best VM ep of 2007, I'd give a shout out to what me at the time probably thought was the best. "Debasement Tapes", which unfortunately I remember very little of, other than Paul Fucking Rudd being fucking awesome. But according to me-at-the-time, everyone was pretty in character and all the wacky shipping worked out.
And then, another part of me was going to be slick and say the best episode of 2007 was that 15 minute Veronica-goes-CIA pilot, but that wasn't really the best, and it would be more of a philosophical statement about the state of the show.
In other news, I totally saw Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and yeah, it rocked. It rocked on so many different levels of rocking.
What shows are you looking forward to in the new fall TV season?
Well we have Heroes, House, The Office, Grey's Anatomy, My Name is Earl, Scrubs, 30 Rock, and Stargate Atlantis. I'm pretty pumped for all of those, but the one I'm most looking forward to hasn't even aired it. It's called Pushing Daisies, and it is simply spectacular in ever sense of the word. I haven't talked about it here, but honestly, every single one of you guys needs to watch it. It's probably the best pilot you'll see this year. It's so good that I'm worried it'll be canceled. That happens with good shows.
I have a lot to say about TV from this week :-) Beware of spoilers if you are behind on any show.
Battlestar Galactica 3.12
So...wow! I was pretty unexcited about the cliff hanger at the end of "The Eye of Jupiter" but I thought this episode really kept some suspense. Per usual I was insanely intrigued by Baltar, Three, and Six. I really do love Baltar's character, particularly the way he encouraged Three to fulfill her destiny. I got the sense that this was Baltar not really buying into this actually working, but hoping if it does that Three would find out if he's a Cylon. I just loved how reassuring he was, it was too kind and comforting to be Baltar's words. Last time I heard him be like that was when he basically told Boomer it was OK to kill herself in "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part 1." So, Three saw the Final 5, and one of them she felt to apologize to, and that one Baltar was right about. So... I have no idea who it could be. My friend thinks I'm giving the writers too much credit by assuming there will be clues in previous episodes. I think she's wrong.
You see, we assumed the whole bit with Starbuck's apartment at the end of the episode was retconned, you know, just taking previous events and making shit up about it. But then I got nerdy.
This is from "Valley of Darkness", 2.02! I plan to listen to this week's BSG podcast to see if Ron Moore mentions if they planned this as carefully as I hoped or if it was "Oh, that's a cool design, let's use that again" thing. I guess I'll find out later.
General 24 Rant
I really like 24. I like it better when I can watch 4 or 5 episodes at a time, but I like it. I have a problem with their portrayal of this season's Average Joe Terrorist. See, they introduce this Muslim family with the father being unlawfully and unrightfully taken away. Then you see his son being harassed by some asshole racist neighbors. So this Muslim boy, who appeared to be the start of a storyline featuring unsubstantiated racist profiling on a personal lever, stays with a friend's family who is fully supportive of him and do not believe him to be a terrorist. Well, guess what? THE MUSLIM IS A FUCKING TERRORIST. There was even a line where the family goes "so they were right!" That's right, those assholes in the beginning were actually justified. That is what bothered me. This basically said "most likely, if you are beating up a Muslim, they're probably terrorists anyway!" That is overstating what happened, but it is kinda what went down. I thought, for once 24 would show an innocent's perspective to what is going on. Show what a poor Muslim boy goes through when terrorists go wild. But they don't, they embrace the stereotype worse than ever. If only this boy (Kumar if you were wondering) wasn't shown first as the victim, I wouldn't have a big problem. The fact that the aggressors now come off as being right, that is wrong.
Heroes 1.12
So, initial reactions: HEEEE!!! I swear, this show just finds different ways to be awesome. I watched the episode twice :-) Once with commentary from nbc.com, which was the funniest thing...ever. Plus, Sendhil is very sexy with glasses. So I've been theorizing my effing ass off with this show. Maybe it's because I think everything is so much simpler and straightforward than with other shows *cough*Lost*cough* So, let's start with Claire and who her father is. My money's on this mysterious Linderman, who we have yet to see. Tim Kring made a point by having us not see him yet, and he obviously is a very important character. The Haitian stated that Claire's parents worked for HRG, but what if even The Haitian doesn't know who the father is? I also think that Linderman is in charge of the whole HRG production. Simone said something very interesting. She said Linderman is a big collector of Isaac's art and owns almost every piece. Sure sounds like someone who knows that the paintings predict the future. Plus he has the dough to finance HRG's operation...
So, Peter. The reason he collapsed at the end of "Fallout" was because he was absorbing too much power. Think about it: Nathan, Isaac, Hiro, Claire, Sylar, The Haitian, Matt all in the same town. At one point they were pretty much in the same building or close to it. That's a shitload of abilities to be experiencing, even if he only sorta got a gift or a piece of it. I'm stuck on Peter's ability to dream the future. What's up with that????? I mean, I honestly believe it's related to his mimicry. Which brings me back to Simone's father. Peter was his nurse, and Peter probably spent 12 hours a day, 7 days a week with the guy. What if Simone's father had the future dreams? What if Peter, if exposed long enough, can permanently assume someone's power? Dunno, I'm kinda shaky on that theory, but it's probably the one I'm sticking to the most.
Veronica Mars 3.10
So after the amazingness which was "Spit & Eggs" I wasn't sure if this episode would be good. It was actually very, very good, even if Veronica and Logan only were broken up for what amounted for 1.5 episodes. I hoped they would have more onscreen not-dating. Oh well. At the end I felt so badly for Piz, though once again, I hoped he and Veronica went further so as to increase the emotional response and pain for Piz. Actually had V and Piz hooked up, it would have just complicated everything, and made great drama.
So this whole murder mystery is pretty much the last mystery arc. R.T. decided to drop that aspect of the show, and frankly I'm skeptical. I don't know how he'll pull that off with this show. Will he just amp up the character drama, which IMO would lead to melodrama? Will he put more of a focus on the MotW's, which I'm not big on in general (though the monkey this week was super cute)?
-- End Spoilers
I think if you haven't seen the Scrubs musical episode you should make it your mission to see it ASAP. It was pretty much as amazing as I had hoped. And yes, it's on my ipod, and yes I've watch it more than 5 times.
In random news, I saw Pan's Labyrinth and it was so amazing, like I could see it over and over and over again. It's probably the best movie I've seen in a while, and I've seen some great films lately (Dreamgirls and Happy Feet). I recommend that everyone see it.
OK, so I've already seen it like three times, and it is by far my third favorite Scrubs episode, behind "My Screwup" and "My Lunch." I'm not sure which is my favorite, I think they tied. But I already have the episode for my iPod and I'm so prepped to buy the soundtrack for the musical, which Bill Lawrence already said would be up on iTunes. So what do any of you think
ps. Self Promotion, feel free to join the Scrubs group I created.
OK, so today rocks for many reasons!!
1. It's snowing! Finally, it's about damn time. Seriously, how can it be winter without snow. Too bad it won't be enough for a snow day or anything. There are nice flakes too.
2. Scrubs musical, which I've only been looking forward to for... oh a year. Judging by the clips, this really will be the best episode ever. I actually believe the cast and crew when they say how brilliant and special this episode will be. I added the two clips if you haven't already watched it. And the musical airs 9pm EST (8pm Central) on NBC.
I stumbled upon this TV Squad interview with Bill Lawrence about Scrubs, the musical, and lots of random things. It's definately worth a read.
Wow it's back. I mean it really died after Friends, and there wasn't a comedy block that could live up to the name. But tonight will be different. Tonight there's going to be My Name Is Earl, The Office, Scrubs, and 30 Rock. All three are brilliant strong comedies that belong together. I'm reobsessing with Scrubs thanks to syndication! It's allowing me to relive all the amazing moments and episodes. It reminded me of how fantastic this show really is.
Tonight I'm probably most excited for the Gervais-Merchant episode of The Office. I really am. I've said it before, but I want to see how they handle the exaggerated Michael Scott and Dwight, and the independently developed Pam and Jim. I want to see what they do with Karen, who doesn't really have a UK counterpart. This show is in unchartered territories for these UK writers, and I want to see how it goes. I want to see a slight British spin on the US counterpart. I have faith in them, so basically expectations are high.
WHEE!
Oh yeah and new Grey's Anatomy, which I said last week, will surely change everything. But seriously, Must See TV Thursdays are back, even if they don't say so.
